Guruji’s Holi Experience

[1]Our beloved Guruji, Shri Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas, attained samadhi on the auspicious day of Holi. In the following excerpt from This House is On Fire [2], Guruji’s biography, Guruji tells of this experience.

At 9:00 pm on the auspicious full moon day in March called Holi, Madhusudandas reached his final, blessed goal while chanting the name of Ram. His 30-year struggle was over.

Within five minutes of beginning to chant, he lost consciousness. A cyclonic thunderblast reverberated through his body, which was suddenly filled with divine light. The kundalini began ascending gradually from the muladhara chakra. The experience brought him “a peculiar pleasure,” but Madhusudandas also felt as if he were suffocating. The lower part of his body became numb.

“I was scared to death and wondered whether I would ever come down to the normal plane of consciousness,” he said. “Then the kundalini traveled above the eyebrows, I felt as if my skull were bursting with bliss and as if bliss were sprinkling like a fountain through the hair follicles of my head.” Madhusudandas compared his bliss to the joy a desperately ill man feels when he is suddenly healed. He wanted to stay in this state forever. Later, he realized he had been swimming in the sea of bliss for two-and-a half-hours.

“I realized that my fears were baseless. The uneasiness of mind that I had since childhood, the search for ‘Who am I?’ and the constant fear of death vanished into oblivion,” he said. “Life seemed full of joy, and realizing that I had reached my goal, I understood the importance of this life.”

Humbled with gratitude, Madhusudandas gently knelt first before his ishta-devata, Lord Ram, and then before his guru. He mentally prostrated before Lord Hanuman and all the saints and teachers from whom he had received guidance during his sadhana. He bowed low to Swami Vivekananda, who had been such a great inspiration to him.

Madhusudandas’ experience made both him and his guru deeply happy. He had come home to divine knowledge and love, the place all human souls are meant to be.
